Early in March, Ron and I had the opportunity to participate in a 2 day Finger Lakes Business Study.
(Thank you Clarke for being diligent in arranging this fantastic winter getaway tour!)
The Finger Lakes have up to 150 wineries, Craft Beer Distilleries and various Whiskey, Vodka & Gin Distilleries.
I must say, it was interesting to say the least to not only taste but learn of all the various styles these folks have crafting their final products.
We found it very interesting that in this district, the Seneca Lake does not freeze, yet there may be some pockets of ice, the vast of it will not go solid.
Another delight is my personal favourite is Millie's Cafe in Penn Yan New York. Millie Bloomquist was justly honored by President Obama with the Presidential Citizens Medal at the White House.
"Millie was a force of nature to be reckoned with.
She developed a breakfast club in her district, primarily for the rural kids who were in poverty conditions. She was relentless in her efforts - not only for the kids, but for the community.
When Penn Yan flooded out in the downtown core, Millie was right there helping with the cleanup efforts.
Millie implemented a Backpack Weekend Program, so those in need would have food for the weekend!"
Millie, I salute you!!! .. this cafe support around 500 needy children every weekend!...
(Millie passed away late last year, age 94. The town is still trying to recover from her passing. ONE IN A MILLION!)
If you should ever imagine taking such a tour, I would recommend these stops we enjoyed.
1. New York State Wine & Culinary Centre
2. the Cornell Agriculture & Food Technology Park
3. Climbing Bines Brewery & Hop Farm
4. Hermann Wiemer Vineyards.
5. Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel
6. Glenora Wine Cellars - tasting & dinner
7. Finger Lakes Distilling
8. Cornell Lab of Ornithology
9. Americana Vinelands - tasting & lunch
and then to Seneca County Army Depot
Cheers Millie and All!
